3rd Annual Welcome Home Event
The Audie L Murphy VA Memorial Veterans Hospital Division part of the South Texas Veterans Health Care System (STVHCS} Social Work Service hosted the “3rdAnnual OIF/OEF/OND Welcome Home Event” on Saturday, May 17, 2014, Armed Forces Day. The event was held from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
The “3rd Annual OIF/OEF/OND Welcome Home Event” offered Veterans an opportunity to connect with their peers and create important social networks, 791 veterans and their family members were in attendance. If you count the veteran volunteers, we had 904 in attendance along with 72 different Vendors participating.TDVA had a table exhibiting militaria, medals, citations, photographs along with giving out free T-shirts promoted our nation’s military history providing information about our organization’s ongoing veteran community missions. TDVAinvited all Active Duty military personnel and military veterans and their families and our supportive public to the 3rd Annual Welcome Home Event!
This event had several veteran organizations and the VA Social Work Services providing information on VA programs, employment assistance, education, benefits, and recovery programs encompassing all aspects of the veteran’s life: TBI, mental health, employment, social and emotional health, financial health, and so much more! This event received media attention.
Armed Forces Day is celebrated on the third Saturday in May. It falls near the end of Armed Forces Week, which begins on the second Saturday of May and ends on the third Sunday of May. First observed on 20 May 1950, the day was created on 31 August 1949, to honor Americans serving in the five U.S. military branches.
