TDVA Attends BTC Event

On January 26, 2014, the Texas Disabled Veterans Association provided Bill Miller’s BBQ for the 2nd Annual Celebration of Beyond The Chair (BTC) and the 1st Beyond The Chair’s SCI/Neurological Disability Support Group get-together. This socializing event was held at Beyond The Chair located at 5310 Jackwood STE 2, San Antonio, Texas. Over 30 BTC clients, family members, caregivers, and staff members attended the event. Each client introduced themselves and shared their stories of injury and recovery and how BTC has improved their mental and physical well-being. BTC staff members also introduced themselves, sharing their training experiences, and goals as Neuro Fitness Specialists. Special thanks to Neuro Fitness Specialists (Kourtney Gamache, Johnny Rivera and Amanda Johnston) and new interns and cofounders Laura Dominguez-Tauer and Nito Blochlinger (Neuro Fitness Specialist) for creating a unique adaptive exercise gym. Beyond The Chair exists to provide an improved quality of life for individuals with spinal cord injuries and other neurological/physical disabilities through intensive exercise programs to enhance overall functional capacity. BTC’s highly motivated and skilled staff of Neuro-Fitness Specialists utilizes exercise principles, techniques, and modalities that are adapted to enhance the strength, endurance, and mobility of each individual with functional limitations. We strongly believe that our program is a great approach to bridge the gap between healthcare and fitness professionals.

Door In The Wall Xmas

On December 9, 2012, TDVA attended the "A Country Christmas La Villita"' hosted annually by The Door In The Wall (a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization) at the La Villita Assembly Building. This Christmas event began at 1 PM until 6 PM and over 450 volunteers and guest attended and enjoyed wonderful country music provided by The Meyer Anderson Bandand food. There were many corporate sponsors and TDVA provided Christmas candy and gifts for 127 children and adults (ranging from 3 months - 53 year old) and each gift was presented by Santa Claus. The San Antonio Spurs Coyote attended the party and took pictures with disabled adults, adolescents, and children. For 18 years, Door In The Wall, Inc. has provided programs for people with disabilities. Holiday Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon

On December 13, 2012, TDVA members attended the 6th Annual Holiday Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon at Joe's Crab Shack in San Antonio, Texas. Over 125 VA volunteers and VA staff members enjoyed lunch and cake. 32nd National Wheelchair Games

TDVA members Candor Tovar and Sean Michaud (left to right) recently attended the 32nd National Wheelchair Games and won medals in their perspective competition. Mr. Tovar won a Bronze Medal in Manual Wheelchair Bowling. Mr. Michaud won a Gold Medal in Javelin and a Silver Medal in Shot Put. We congratulate both Marines on a job well done! The National Wheelchair Games were held in Richmond, Virginia from June 25 – July 1, 2012.

TDVA Visits Scouts

On March 24, 2012, TDVA visited with Boy Scout Troop 777 in Denver City, Texas near Lubbock, Texas. The Scouts had just completed a 5 mile hike and TDVA was able to visit with the some of the Scouts. PTSD & Mental Heath, Our Battle for Veterans

On January 4, 2012, TDVA attended the “PTSD & Mental Health, Our Battle for Veterans” hosted by the San Antonio Coalition for Veterans. Over 70 Veterans organizations attended the meeting with guest speaker Rev. Dr. Chrys Parker a clinical chaplain, pastoral counselor and trauma therapist who has provided care for over 2500 traumatized persons. Dr. Parker specializes in the spiritual and psychological care of those who suffer from PTSD as a result of combat, critical burn injury and sexual assault, and provides professional consultation and education to physicians, surgeons, and psychiatrists. The meeting was held at the Alamo Area Council of Governments. There were many other great speakers who addressed the issues of PTSD among the Veteran community. "Mixed Ability" Bowling Tourney

On 22 July 2011, 20 bowlers participated in the “Mixed Ability” Bowling Tournament located at the Oak Hills Bowling Alley. The tournament consisted of one power chair ramp bowler, one manual chair bowler, and one abled bodied bowler per team. Each member of the winning team received a $50.00 gift card and a lunch, that was provided for all participants and volunteers. Bowlers who participated were veterans and the event was organized by the Audie L. Murphy VAMC Spinal Cord Injury Recreation Therapy. TDVA attended the 1st Annual Operation Comfort, Memorial Day Car Show on 30 May 2011 in Helotes, Texas. The event was attended by many veterans and supporters honoring Memorial Day. There were over 100 classic and vintage vehicles on display and everyone enjoyed food, refreshments, music, and an appearance by the San Antonio Spurs Coyote and Spurs cheerleaders. The event was hosted by the Helotes AG Booster Club and South Texas Car Club to raise money for Wounded Warriors.
