Thanksgiving Bake Sale

On Friday November 20, 2015 the Audie L. Murphy VAVS Committee hosted the VA Bake Sale at ALMVHS, 100% of the proceeds go directly to a fund that is set up to help Veterans with personal  items that they often need while visiting the hospital. These same Veterans also have needs, such as reading glasses, undergarments, warm cloths, bus passes for their appointments, phone cards to call loved ones, toiletries and many other basic items we often take for granted. The baked items that the Ladies of Alpha Kappa Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi provide are the hallmark that everyone looks for now with this event. Everything they do is personnel and done with a touch of love, God Bless.

Bridging The Gap

The Texas Disabled Veterans Association (TDVA) participated in the 2nd Annual Bridging The Gap Event held on Saturday, October 17, 2015, from 12:00 to 5:00 p.m. The event was organized by the San Antonio Coalition of Veterans and Families (SACVF) and held at VFW Post 76, 10th Street, San Antonio, Texas 78215 which is the oldest VFW Post in the State of Texas. Various Veterans organizations from throughout the city and state provided educational information, informing Veterans of their benefits and entitlements. Vendors provided educational materials of their products and services catering to the needs of Veterans. A BBQ lunch, live music entertainment by Entourage Big Band, games for children, and raffle items were provided by SACVF. All proceeds raised from this event will be used to support the unmet needs in our Veteran community. TDVA gave out informational handouts about our ongoing programs, business cards, and canvas Eco-friendly tote bags to every Veteran who visited our booth. Keynote Speaker was Senator José Menendez (D-26) who spoke about the ongoing efforts by state and local government officials to improve health care for Veterans and legislation to increase ongoing and future entitlements to all Veterans. A salute of gratitude to the local High School ROTC Color Guard and Drill Team. This was a highly successful event and many Veterans will benefit from the proceeds raised through various Veterans programs.

Invincible Spirit Festival

On June 5, 2015, members of the Texas Disabled Veterans Association attended the Fort Sam Houston, Texas SAMMC Patient, Staff, and Family, Appreciation Event In conjunction with the “Invincible Spirit Festival” and met Gary Sinise (Actor/Director/Musician), TDVA members gave Mr. Gary Sinise a Texas Disabled Veterans Association (TDVA) Challenge Coin on behalf of the TDVA membership for all of his hard work honoring and visiting Wounded Warriors throughout the Nation! Mr. Sinise also heads The Gary Sinise Foundation at Garysinisefoundation.org which creates and supports unique Veterans programs. TDVA was also able to discuss several of our ongoing Veteran’s programs with Mr. Sinise. Several hundred patients, medical staff members, veterans, and family members enjoyed cold beverages, barbecued food with all the trimmings, and music featuring, Gary Sinise and the Lt. Dan Band also featuring Robert Irvine.

4th OEF/OIF Welcome Home Event

TDVA attended and participated at the 4th Annual OEF/OIF/OND Welcome Home Event which coincided with the 45th anniversary of "Armed Forces Day, which was officially celebrated on Saturday, May 20, 1950, marking the first combined demonstration by America's defense team of its progress. Armed Forces Day recognizes the readiness and preparedness by all of our uniformed military service men and women unified as a single force capable of working together protecting our land, sea, and air defense. Several hundred Veterans, Active Duty Personnel, and their families attended the 4th Welcome Home Event held today, Saturday, May 16, 2015 at Morgan’s Wonderland in San Antonio, Texas known as “Military City USA”. The event was held from 10 AM – 2 PM and everyone enjoyed food, live music, DJ music, refreshments, display booths, and networking with various veterans organizations and businesses dedicated to improving the lives of our Veterans and Active Duty Personnel. The Texas Disabled Veterans Association set up an exhibit table commemorating the military service of Vietnam War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient Roy P. Benavidez and World War II Silver Star Metal Recipient Samuel Thomas with military memorabilia belonging to both military heroes. TDVA also provided brochures highlighting its 4 ongoing programs (visit www.tdva.net), business cards, and eco-friendly tote bags to all military patriots and their families who attended the event. TDVA salutes the Audie L Murphy VA Medical Center Volunteer Services for their successful organization of this wonderful family oriented event and all of the other VA Volunteers, ROTC student volunteers, and Morgan’s Wonderland Staff who kept the entire event on time and comfortable for everyone in attendance. TDVA looks forward to next year’s 5th Annual Welcome Home Event and Armed Forces Day Celebration!
